Painting Your Own Black Chandelier Lighting

If you are looking to create your very own black chandelier lighting, then one of two things has happened- You cannot find a light that you love even after extensive shopping, or two- You love the light you currently have, but you just wish it were a different color, like black. Well, for both of these cases, you are in luck, because we are going to tell you how to create your very own black chandelier, and even better, do it cheap!

Okay, obviously we are not going to start from scratch, so our first recommendation is to find a lighting fixture that you love, if it is not already in your home. Great recommendations include shopping at second hand stores, salvage shops, and yes- antique stores. When shopping for a light like this, the main components you should check for in buying a used light are:

 1)      That it works

2)      That all electrical components are there

3)      That all glass globes (if applicable) are there, and are not broken

4)      Make sure the light has a paintable surface

5)      Check for sturdiness

Once you check your light for these things, and it checks out fine, you now have your light fixture, and you are on your way to having your black chandelier light!

Now, if you already have one in your home, that you just want the finish to be different, then obviously, you need to remove it from the ceiling.  The first step in the redoing process is getting your paint, which in this case will be black spray paint. Do not go with the cheapest option when picking your spray color, as a mid-high grade option will work best.

Step one is paint preparation. This is a simple, easy to do step, which is to simply buff with a light fine grit sand paper the entire surface you intend to paint. After this is done, Remove all dust particles with water, and allow the unit to completely dry.

The next step it to cover all, and once again, that is ALL parts that you do not want colored. This includes the light stems, wiring, and any other part of the chandelier that you wish to keep the way it is. You can cover it with paper, and use painters tape to adhere the paper on snuggly.

Now, it is time to paint! Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors. When you begin to spray your fixture, make sure there is no wind breeze. The most important part of the spray technique on your soon-to-be black chandelier is to use wide, even, and regular strokes. Light coat first, then you will go back over 1-2 more times. It may even take a 4th coat with being such a dark color, and always allow the coats to dry in between sprays, which can take from ½ to one full hour.

Allow the unit to dry thoroughly, which can take from one day to three full days, before installing or reinstalling the light. And there you have it… Black chandelier lighting that has a professional, brand new looking appearance, for a very inexpensive cost!
