Choosing Your Black Chandelier Lighting

When you are looking to install lighting for your new home, or a home that you are remolding, you may consider using black chandelier lighting. These are popular for use above dining areas, such as breakfast nooks, dining tables, and bar areas in kitchens. The finish on a black chandelier will pop against most ceilings, making the light a focal point in the room. There are many options when it comes to choosing your chandelier fixtures, as many different finishes are available. Just a few minutes of online shopping will return to you thousands of black chandelier lighting prices and design options, so how can you choose which one of those thousands is the “perfect” one for your dining area?

Size:

The first thing you will want to consider when making your decision is being definitive on the size of chandelier you will need. Area such as breakfast dining and bars tend to need smaller units. For areas such as these, three light black chandeliers may be as large as you need to go. Some of these will hang further down towards the eating surface than others, usually with a pendant style design. Typically, above a kitchen island or bartop is where you would want to use these particular lights.  Others will hug the ceiling, and some will also be adjustable, so that you can choose the perfect height needed for your dine space.

Style:

Next on the list of getting your options narrowed, is to decide which type of style you hope to purchase for your black chandelier light. This should be determined by a number of factors:

1)      The style of your home

2)      The style of other lighting in your home

3)      What style you love at first sight

4)      What sizes are available in the particular styles you like

The finishes on black chandelier lighting can be different and not necessarily solid black. Oil rubbed bronze, Iron, wrought iron, and metal are the options when it comes to choosing a black finished fixture. When browsing, you will see that there are very modern ones available, as well as styles that are traditional, Asian, contemporary, and even country-styled. If you choose a chandelier that will use lampshades atop the lights, you can make the style even more to your taste. The lamp shade styles are often used on the candle or candelabra style of light. These can be purchased as 5 light, 3 light, and even 9 light, or larger. Five light is the most common above larger kitchen eating areas, but if your space allows, you can get away with using much larger lights. For a more sophisticated and elegant look, you can find black chandelier lighting with crystals.

Budget:

While this is an important factor in making your decision, it should not be the determining factor. You should always allow a plentiful budget for the lighting in your home, as it sets the tone, mood, and style of your living space. However, even those searching for cheap black chandelier lighting will have plenty of options. Many discount and wholesale retailers now offer stylish options for home light.  You will find that online shopping will minimize the amount you will have to pay for your unit. Although, if you want a unique piece, or a really special piece, a custom local lighting store is going to be the best choice, but your budget will normally take a smack. It really depends how important and dominate you want your black chandelier lighting to be.

Painting Your Own Black Chandelier Lighting

If you are looking to create your very own black chandelier lighting, then one of two things has happened- You cannot find a light that you love even after extensive shopping, or two- You love the light you currently have, but you just wish it were a different color, like black. Well, for both of these cases, you are in luck, because we are going to tell you how to create your very own black chandelier, and even better, do it cheap!

Okay, obviously we are not going to start from scratch, so our first recommendation is to find a lighting fixture that you love, if it is not already in your home. Great recommendations include shopping at second hand stores, salvage shops, and yes- antique stores. When shopping for a light like this, the main components you should check for in buying a used light are:

 1)      That it works

2)      That all electrical components are there

3)      That all glass globes (if applicable) are there, and are not broken

4)      Make sure the light has a paintable surface

5)      Check for sturdiness

Once you check your light for these things, and it checks out fine, you now have your light fixture, and you are on your way to having your black chandelier light!

Now, if you already have one in your home, that you just want the finish to be different, then obviously, you need to remove it from the ceiling.  The first step in the redoing process is getting your paint, which in this case will be black spray paint. Do not go with the cheapest option when picking your spray color, as a mid-high grade option will work best.

Step one is paint preparation. This is a simple, easy to do step, which is to simply buff with a light fine grit sand paper the entire surface you intend to paint. After this is done, Remove all dust particles with water, and allow the unit to completely dry.

The next step it to cover all, and once again, that is ALL parts that you do not want colored. This includes the light stems, wiring, and any other part of the chandelier that you wish to keep the way it is. You can cover it with paper, and use painters tape to adhere the paper on snuggly.

Now, it is time to paint! Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors. When you begin to spray your fixture, make sure there is no wind breeze. The most important part of the spray technique on your soon-to-be black chandelier is to use wide, even, and regular strokes. Light coat first, then you will go back over 1-2 more times. It may even take a 4th coat with being such a dark color, and always allow the coats to dry in between sprays, which can take from ½ to one full hour.

Allow the unit to dry thoroughly, which can take from one day to three full days, before installing or reinstalling the light. And there you have it… Black chandelier lighting that has a professional, brand new looking appearance, for a very inexpensive cost!
